Alcohols Used for Botanical Extraction
CDA 12A PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Simple Solvents Completely Denatured Ethanol with 5% N-Heptane (CDA 12-A-1) 200 is typically used during the plant extraction process and as a solvent in cleaning the oil during the winterization / purification process. This is an industry approved standard solvent. It evaporates completely and leaves no taste.
Because n-Heptane has a higher boiling point than Ethanol, it may be necessary to heat the evaporator to a higher temperature (+5-10° C).
CDA 12A PROPERTIES
- Boiling point: 176 °F (80 °C) at 760 mmHg
- Flash point: 55.4 °F (13 °C) Closed Cup
- Vapor pressure: 59.5 mm Hg (100% Ethyl alcohol)
All Completely Denatured Alcohol (CDA) is subject to TTB regulation:
Shipments do not require any permit or approval from the TTB, but must be for an approved formula and for the uses allowed by 27 CFR 20.141. Please see the TTB’s site on Completely Denatured Alcohol for more details.
N HEPTANE
n-Heptane is the straight-chain alkane with the chemical formula H3C(CH2)5CH3 or C7H16. Heptane (and its many isomers) is widely applied in laboratories as a totally non-polar solvent. As a liquid, it is ideal for transport and storage.
Heptanes are cheap, relatively safe, largely non reactive, and easily evaporated non-polar solvents. Heptanes are used to extract oils from plant flowers, seeds, leaves and stalks and increasing in popularity due to low residual solvents. Heptanes are often found in fuels, paints and coatings.
N Heptane Specs:
N Heptane is increasingly popular in the hemp & cannabis industries.
